“Steel Buildings” “¦ in the past this term linked to economy, unsightly sheds. Pre-engineered steel structures on the scene today provide the best buildings for an array of intricate shapes, mostly because of improvements over the past number of years. Some of these newer buildings include agricultural structures, strip malls, airplane hangars, and many others “¦ all with high-grade steel.
All-steel buildings gained popularity in the early twentieth century. One of the first uses for this material was in automobile garages. Steel quickly gained momentum as the building material of choice for shops and storage structures because they are durable and inexpensive.
This trend continued into the 1920s with structures for farms and many other ranching and farming buildings. Ranchers and farmers replaced wood with steel buildings in rural areas.
The early line of pre-fabricated buildings to use a rigid frame set up became popular in the 1940s. It was found that this rigid structural framework was a strong and durable assembly method for steel building framing. This system is in use today as a recognized style for building various projects. At this point, larger, inexpensive, and more steel structure systems became available for companies, with the added advantage of faster erection time. Older aircraft hangars, initially built without steel, were replaced with steel airplane hangars after the 1940s.
At the end of the 1940s, upgrades were applied to pre-fabricated buildings, adding increased engineering flexibility and area. In 1956, the Metal Building Manufacturers Association was founded. This association standardized manufacturing, and pushed for improvements, appealing to a broader consumer base for pre-engineered and pre-fabricated steel buildings. With $1-million in new projects at the end of the 1950s, the steel structure industry grew to $2.5-billion in new structures by 2000.
Into the 21st Century, commercial quality steel continues to gain approval. Costs for steel climbed during the 21st century, but this hasn’t deterred building buyers, industries and businesses, and other institutions. These all continue to use high-grade steel as their building material of choice since it costs less than many other choices.
